Step Two: Check the connections in your room

This step is different depending on which building you will be connecting in. Please read the section which matches your building and then move on to Step Three.
  • Cisco Cable Modems - Russell, Creswell, Church, Hill, Oglethorpe, Payne, Rutherford, and Soule Halls

This step is pretty simple, but there are several things that need to be connected for the network to work correctly. Obviously you need your computer plugged in with the network cable firmly plugged in to your network card. Your network cable should be plugged in to the yellow Ethernet Ports on the back of the cable modem (black box on the wall). There should also be a large black power cord plugged in the back of the modem where it says Power, and a coax (Cable-TV) cable plugged in where it says Cable TV In. You should follow this cable back to the wall and make sure it is connected to the side of the splitter without the filter (a battery sized metal cylinder). The power cord should also go to a small black box adjacent to the modem, which should have another cord connected to a working power outlet on the wall.

If everything is connected properly check the lights on the opposite side of the modem from where you plugged in all the cables. If the light labeled "Link" is on and not flashing your modem should be on-line and ready to go. If the link light is not solid wait a few minutes for the modem to finish starting up and then check our Quick Fix Section for a few suggestions on what might be wrong.

  • Ethernet - Brumby, Boggs, Lipscomb, Mell, Morris, Myers, Mary Lyndon, Reed, the East Campus Village, and Family Housing Buildings G & H.

Connecting to the network in an ethernet dorm should be pretty quick and easy. Depending on which dorm you are in the plates look somewhat different. In each case the port for you to plug in your phone should be on top with either one or two network ports below the phone port. Ethernet ports are often orange while phone ports are typically white. In Reed Hall, the top ethernet port is usually active while the bottom port is inactive. In the other dorms all ports should be active. Simply plug your network cable into one of the ethernet ports in your room, and connect the other end to your computer. If there is an active connection, after a few seconds in Windows the Network Cable Unplugged icon near the clock should disappear. If this message remains or says Media Disconnected then try plugging into a different port or using a different cable. If you still cannot connect, or there aren´t enough ports in your room, give us a call.

  • Long Ranged Ethernet - All Family Housing buildings except G & H

In each apartment there is a small grey LRE Device typically mounted on the wall in the living room. On top of the LRE are four lights. The power and ready lights should be on regardless of whether your computer is connected or not. When you connect your computer the ETH light will also come on after a few seconds. If these lights are not on make sure all cables are plugged in firmly. If you still do not have a ready light, try unplugging any phones in the entire apartment from the phone jacks and see if the light comes on. There is a phone jack on the bottom of the LRE for you to plug in your phone. If you are still having problems, give us a call.
