Virus and Spyware Removal

Step Two - Safe Mode

Now plug your network cable back in and reboot your computer to enter Safe Mode. To do this you need to start tapping the F8 key as soon as your computer begins to start up. If you see the Windows logo then you've already missed it and will need to reboot. When done correctly you should see a text menu with a bunch of options. Choose Safe Mode with Networking. Your computer will then begin booting into safe mode, which may take considerably longer to load so be patient. Virtually no viruses or most Spyware will start or run in safe mode.

  1. Once your computer is finished loading, install and run Ad-Aware. It should automatically update itself. If it does not then make sure it is updated before scanning. If you cannot get online, go to a computer that can with a blank CD or a USB memory stick and download the latest definitions.
  2. Once AdAware is installed and updated Perform a Full System Scan if it does not start by itself. This will take approximately 5-30 minutes depending on your system.
  3. When the scan is complete right click one of the items and Select all Objects. If there is a Negligible Objects tab at the top, click on it and do the same for those objects. 400 or more critical objects indicates a severe spyware problem.
  4. Choose Next and AdAware will remove the spyware it finds. If it asks to scan again when you reboot, choose ok to allow it to scan.
  5. If you had a lot of Spyware or your computer could not get online then you should next run the WinSock XP Fix. Choose Fix and let it complete the fix, but choose No when it asks if you want to Reboot.
