Virus and Spyware Removal

Step Five - Windows Update and Alternative Browsers

Your computer should now be virus and spyware free. If you are still having problems, call us and explain what you have already tried. Any problems beyond this point often require you to reformat (erase) your hard drive and reinstall Windows.

  1. The last thing to do is install SP2 for Windows XP or SP4 for Windows 2000 if you have not already.
  2. After you finish this, or if you did not download the installer, open Internet Explorer and go to http://www.windowsupdate.com.
  3. After Windows Update gets set up you should see an area on the right that says whether you have Automatic Updates Turned On or not. If you do not, it is strongly encouraged you turn them on and set a time for Windows to check for updates. If your computer is off at this time it will check when you next turn it on.
  4. Install any Critical Updates the website lists. This may take a few visits to the site and a good chunk of time downloading, so make sure to get them all. These updates patch holes in the Windows Operating System that Microsoft finds. Having an outdated anti-virus program, or not being up to date with Windows Update is the cause of the vast majority of virus infections.
After Windows Update is through cheer, pat yourself on the back, and throw a party. You should have now removed any spyware or virus on your computer and secured your system to prevent future problems. The last thing you may wish to do is install an alternative browser. Both Mozilla Firefox and Opera are easy to set up and are often immune to many security risks and virus threats associated with Internet Explorer. You may wish to look at their websites to see what other useful features their browsers may have that are not available on Internet Explorer.
