Wireless in the Residence Halls

Housing Wireless The PAWS wireless network does not extend the student's room. PAWS connectivity will be available in the lobby or some of the common areas in your building. Check our wireless map or the PAWS website for detailed location information. Any student who wishes to have a wireless network may install his/her own wireless router or access point in the room.

Where can I use the PAWS wireless network in the Residence Halls?

Try connecting to PAWS from the lobby, some study lounges, and green space areas outside of your residence hall. Check our wireless map or the PAWS website for more detailed wireless network location information.

How Can I Get Wireless in My Room?

A student may install his/her own wireless router in the room. However, UGA will not provide technical support or assistance for personal wireless networks. All wireless routers/access points must obey the following rules:

  • Wireless access point (WAP) must be officially registered with UGA for Internet access. Contact Student Technology Support at (706) 542-3333 to register.
  • All use of WAP must comply with all applicable laws, The University of Georgia Policies on the Use of Computers, and other relevant UGA policies.
  • All use of WAP and all data transmitted through WAP is the responsibility of the student to which the WAP is registered.
  • WAP must be WEP enabled.
  • WAP must not have default manufacturer administrative password.
  • WAP must not be configured with SSID = "UGA".
  • WAP must not interfere with any PAWS network or other official wireless network.
  • UGA cannot prevent other wireless networks from interfering with user WAP, or otherwise guarantee signal quality or data transmission rates of user WAP.
  • UGA reserves the right to deny network access to the WAP and any other device connected to it.

How Do I Get Help with My Personal Wireless Router?

Once your wireless router/access point has been registered, there is no more technical support available from UGA. You will need to contact your device's manufacturer for additional help installing, configuring, or troubleshooting your personal wireless network.
